Our History
A community hub in the centre of Caernarfon town committed to tackling poverty, food waste and loneliness.
Fareshare Caernarfon
Caernarfon joins Tesco's FareShare scheme. The Cegin Cofi scheme received surplus food from Tesco, and distributed it from Tŷ Peblig on the Ysgubor Goch estate in the town.
Covid and Porthi Pawb
During Covid, surplus food came from the UK-wide Fareshare scheme at Ellesmere Port. Throughout the pandemic, a dedicated group of volunteers packed the food, and delivered it door to door twice a week throughout the town.
We also started providing a hot meal a week to people in need. The scheme started by knocking on doors to find customers, but grew to provide as many as 750 meals each week. Porthi Pawb continued to feed adults until June 2021 and over that period 19,402 meals and puddings were provided for adults and 2,899 meals and desserts for children. We realized there was a dire need for such provision in Caernarfon, and Porthi Pawb volunteers were determined to find a way to continue the provision.
Therefore the scheme continues to provide a free hot meal between 12:30 and 2:00 every Tuesday and Thursday at our new home in Tŷ Seiont.
When the Covid restrictions began to be relaxed, free food began to be distributed outside the O Law i Law shop on Pool Street every Wednesday afternoon and every Saturday morning. The volunteers would also go around houses on Sunday if there was more food than usual. This continued until August 2022, when we started delivering goods from our new home at Tŷ Seiont.
The doors of O Law i Law open
During the pandemic many were facing a difficult financial situation, and we decided to start collecting second-hand clothes, equipment and toys for children and babies for families who were struggling. This also helped the environment by reusing high quality goods.
Caernarfon Town Council took the lead on this project, and grants were secured in order to lease a property on Pool Street to establish the O Law i Law shop. The shop continues to be a great asset to the town. We work together with health visitors, social services, and refugee charities to ensure that help is offered to people in need, free-of-charge. The generosity shown by the people of Caernarfon in their donations is incredible, and a team of active volunteers are on hand to help run the shop led by the manager, Ellen Owen.
The doors of Tŷ Seiont open
A community hub was opened in the Tŷ Seiont building in Caernarfon in order to bring together all of Porthi Dre’s services and proejcts. The hub is now home to all our activities, and rooms are available to be hired there too.
